The Matthews arrived at the end of the week. Danese was delighted to see her family again. She reassured them about her well-being and told them of her happiness. They couldn’t deny she told the truth. She was radiant. The coach was greeted by a large number of people gathered around the front of the church. Word had spread that the Smiths’ son was getting married and many turned out to watch. Danese had never been so nervous. She had convinced herself that everyone waiting at the church knew of her masquerade and were here to point their fingers and accuse her. Taking a deep breath, she laid her hand on her father’s arm and stepped down from the carriage. Fighting the urge to turn and run, she suddenly realized it was not accusation she saw on their eyes. It was admiration! Michael waited anxiously at the altar with his friend, John. He’d taken about as much good-natured teasing as any man was expected to take. When his bride-to-be entered the church, all other thoughts went right out of his head. Danese literally stunned him. She was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. He had no idea how breath taking her beauty was. Lifting her chin, Danese raised her eyes to the crowd and put on her most radiant smile. A small cheer started at the back of the crowd where Danese saw some of Michael’s crew. She raised her hand and waved. They stood side by side at the altar. The groom, attractive beyond compare, stood tall and proud. He had worn a light blue velvet greatcoat with a silver waistcoat, a snowy-white silk shirt with ruffles at neck and sleeve and cream-colored breeches. The material was molded to his powerful thighs and Danese caught her breath allowing her thoughts to wander to what would happen when the crowds were gone and they were all alone.
Page 54 The bride could only be described as gorgeous. Michael’s green eyes drank in the sight of her like a thirsty man. Her shiny, blond hair was gathered at the crown of her head and secured with small tendrils released to fall softly to her neck. His eyes wandered lower and his sigh could be heard at the back of the room. The neckline of her dress showed off her smooth silky skin. A hint of cleavage caused Michael’s heart to beat a steady tattoo. The material of the dress and her sheer chemise were blended so no one could see where the two came together. Row after row of lace seemed to shimmer in the beholder’s eye. Danese drifted through the ceremony as if she stood on a light floating cloud. Her feet didn’t touch the ground until Michael’s lips descended to hers, warm, sensual and loving. Suddenly, she realized she was finally his, his today, his forever. Her eyes brimmed with tears of joy as they turned to embrace their families. At the steps of the church, Michael laughingly scooped Danese up into his arms and she squealed her delight at his impulsiveness. He leaned down to nuzzle her neck, his face hidden from the people surrounding them by her veil Michael murmured pleadingly, “Can’t we just jump in the carriage and run away? I can’t wait to sample everything you’ve always hidden so well.” Danese’s sharp intake of breath and the instant flush that spread across her cheeks indicated she understood exactly what Michael meant.“ Michael Smith! You’re incorrigible!” Danese grinned with delight. Thoughtfully, she glanced over her shoulder and whispered back, “Maybe in the carriage on the way to the reception.” Michael threw back his head and laughed with real joy. He knew there would never be a dull moment spent with the woman he loved. He leaned close to her again, his green eyes wide, pretending shock. “You’re a wanton woman, love. And I swear, by God, I wouldn’t have you any other way!”
