Pages 1 & 2 - illustration pages. Page 3 This book was created especially for Michael Jeremy Smith With love from Grandma and Grandpa December 25, 2000 Page 4 Michael Jeremy Smith was peacefully reclining in his bed, browsing through his newest fishing catalog and thinking about an annual fishing contest at Marion. "I sure wish I could enter," Mike said to himself as he flipped through the pages. Pages 5 & 6 - illustration pages. Page 7 Mike turned the page and saw Bobber Bear in the catalog. "Boy, I wish I could be a fishing bear like Bobber Bear. I would be able to fish anytime I wanted," thought Mike as he gently nodded off to sleep. Page 8 Mike began to dream. In his dream, he was magically transformed into Bobber Bear. What was even more amazing was the fact that Grandpa was also transformed into another fishing bear. Page 9 & 10 - illustration pages. Page 11 Grandpa told Mike to get his fishing rod because they were going to enter the fishing rodeo! Mike was very excited as they began packing for their fishing trip. Along with sandwiches and fruit, they packed plenty of water to drink. Grandpa brought a tent. Page 12 They decided to go to the Bass Pro Shop to get sinkers, flies, hooks, floats and anything else they might need for the fishing contest. Grandpa also looked at the new boats, outdoor gear and other fishing equipment. Pages 13 & 14 - illustration pages. Page 15 Mike was fascinated by the colossal 30,000 gallon saltwater aquarium they found stocked full of trophy-size fish of many types. There was even a real person in the tank hand-feeding the fish! Page 16 At the fish camp, Mike and Grandpa set up the tent for the night. With the boat in the water, they took their places and Grandpa started the motor! "Look out fish, here we come!" yelled Mike and Grandpa at the same time. Pages 17 & 18 - illustration pages. Page 19 First they cruised up the river so Grandpa could find just the right spot. Mike was starting to get impatient when Grandpa said, "This is the place!" Immediately, Mike began looking for fish. He wished Wayne, John and Larry could be here with him. Page 20 Mike watched Grandpa get one fishing pole ready. Next Grandpa grabbed a spinner. Then Grandpa helped Mike get his very own fishing rod ready. Mike was going to try a plastic worm fist. Pages 21 & 22 - illustration pages. Page 23 Mike had trouble throwing out his fishing line. Several times it caught nothing other than branches of some nearby trees. Finally, he learned how to cast his artificial bait to the right spot. Page 24 The first time Mike reeled in his line slowly. He was very disappointed that the fish were not biting. After three more casts, Mike began to understand that you do not catch fish every single time you throw out your line. Soon Mike was catching quite a few fish, but none of them were big enough to win a trophy! Pages 25 & 26 - illustration pages Page 27 With the noon sun directly overhead, Grandpa reeled in the line, but Mike left his line out and set his rod by his seat. Page 28 While he was eating lunch,
Mike heard a noise next to him.
There was a
quick jerk and his pole almost fell into the water.
Mike
quickly grabbed the pole, but the fish that Mike
hooked was so-o-o big that Pages 29 & 30 - illustration pages. Page 31 The sandwiches flew overboard as Mike, Grandpa, the boat, and the fish headed down the river through the rapids. Grandpa looked so funny trying to keep one hand on the boat and the other on the hat. Mike would have chuckled, if he had not been afraid of losing his fish. Page 32 As the boat raced toward Marion,
the other fishing contestants could not get out of the way fast enough.
Fishing poles were snapping and lines were breaking as Wayne,
John and Larry and his other friends were cheering from the
banks. Mike was ready to land the fish and Pages 33 & 34 - illustration pages. Page 35 The fish was the biggest ever caught in Marion. The loudspeaker hailed, "The winner of this year's fishing contest is Michael Jeremy Smith .... Mike,
Mike! Wake up!" said Grandpa
while shaking Mike out of his dream.
